Why home modification for seniors is important?
According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the ageing population in Malaysia has been increasing steadily over the years. As of 2020, the statistics show:
- The population aged 60 years and above has increased from 8.3% in 2000 to 14.4% in 2020.
- The population aged 65 years and above has increased from 4.5% in 2000 to 9.2% in 2020.
- The life expectancy at birth has also increased from 71.8 years in 2000 to 75.7 years in 2020.
Home hazards pose a significant risk for falls among seniors, leading to a high fall rate at home. As a result, home modifications are necessary to reduce the risk of falls and improve safety.
Home modification is cost effective when we compare directly on the loss in Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALY) and Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY). Means when a person fell, become sick, have impairment or disabled, so the person need to bear the medical cost, extra expenses (e.g., need to buy food because cannot cook anymore), loss of income, loss of non-material aspect (e.g. feel lonely, depress), when accummulated, is higher cost than just doing home modification.
