Aging in Place: Maximizing Independence in Daily Activities

It was an honour for our COO Olivia Quah to speak at the Malaysia Healthy Ageing Society Public Forum on "Aging in Place: Maximizing Independence in Daily Activities."

A heartfelt thank you to the Malaysia Healthy Ageing Society for organising this meaningful public forum and bringing together healthcare professionals, caregivers, older adults, and the community to promote healthy ageing.

It was a pleasure to share the stage with Matron Narayani Kunjiraman, who provided valuable insights from the nursing perspective on ageing. Thank you, Matron Nara, for sharing your wealth of experience and reminding us that preserving dignity and independence requires not only good healthcare but also compassionate nursing care.

As the Co-Founder of iElder, and a proud member of the Malaysia Healthy Ageing Society, I am passionate about helping older adults continue living safely and independently in the homes they love.

During my presentation, I shared practical assistive technology solutions that support Ageing in Place, including:

🏡 Activities of Daily Living (ADL) – Simple assistive devices that make dressing, bathing, toileting, transfers, walking, and meal preparation easier and safer.

🚗 Car Mobility Solutions – Helping older adults get in and out of vehicles safely so they can continue attending medical appointments, family gatherings, and social activities.

🪜 Staircase Solutions – Stairlifts and home accessibility solutions that enable seniors to continue living comfortably in multi-storey homes.

🆘 Emergency SOS & Smart Monitoring – Privacy-first technology that detects falls, monitors daily activity, and ensures timely assistance during emergencies, giving families greater peace of mind.

One thing I realised during the forum was that many older adults simply don't know that these assistive technologies exist.

From grab bars and shower chairs to stairlifts, car transfer aids, and emergency SOS systems, these solutions are already available today. Yet many seniors continue to struggle with everyday tasks simply because they are unaware that help is available.

We often accept difficulty as "part of getting old," when in reality, the right assistive technology can make everyday activities safer, easier, and help older adults continue living independently in their own homes.

This reminded me that our role isn't just to provide solutions—it's to educate, create awareness, and empower older adults and their families to make informed choices.
